Whether you're New to the Sport, or New to our Club...its likely that you may have a question or two, about what to expect when you walk in our door. To make your first visit the best it can be, we'd like to help, with answers to your Most Frequently Asked Questions !
(Although we're pretty sure you already know what Table Tennis is...we thought we would offer a quick re-cap....so here goes... ),
Table Tennis or "ping pong", is a fast paced sport in which two or four players hit a lightweight ball back and forth using paddles or rackets, on a hard table divided by a net. Except for the initial serve, players must allow the ball played toward them, only one bounce on their side of the table, before returning it back to the opposite side, with points being scored when a player fails to do so.
However, as the "spin" placed on the ball will alter its' trajectory (..making it harder to return), skill, strategy and reflexes come into play, making it more like a game of high speed chess.
In addition to it being a great deal of FUN !!!....Table Tennis can offer many benefits, with the following being but just a few of the reasons why everyone should play !
Table tennis is good for your health - it's great for working up a sweat and getting the heart rate up. Played at the higher levels, it's one of the fastest sports around, and you don't have to be a pro to get a good workout. Playing a friendly game of table tennis for an hour burns about 300 calories, which is equal to a 27-minute power walk on a treadmill. Just a couple of hours a week can do wonders for your fitness.
It's easy on the body so you can play according to your own capabilities and limitations, while still being competitive. And being a non-contact sport, you don't have to worry about injuries, bruises or broken bones, that tend to be common in other sports.
As there are no age or gender barriers - it's incredibly common for 60 year old veteran members to play 15 year old juniors, for men to play against women, and for athletes with disabilities to compete on equal terms with others, as there is much more to the game than sheer power or strength. Families too, can play in close, competitive matches, without worry of bigger or stronger members dominating games.
Table Tennis is a lifelong sport, that can be played competitively right into one's Senior years' and beyond, and it's never too late to start. As you get older, better use of tactics, and equipment (such as alternate paddle rubbers), can compensate for slowing reflexes or waning speed on the court.
Like chess, there is plenty of planning and strategizing to keep you constantly thinking. It’s an easy game to play, but to win you often not only have to outplay your opponents, you have to out-think them. Several studies done with MRI imaging have shown that beneficial brain changes are possible, after just a few weeks of play.
Table Tennis is an indoor, year round, sport that can be played day or night, without the worry of rain, snow, heat or humidity. Add to that, its' relative in-expense in terms of equipment ( a basic paddle can be purchased for as little as $60), and fees (compared to other sports such as golf or tennis), and you have a hobby or past-time that can be accessed by virtually everyone.
Table Tennis is a great social sport where meeting others, making new friends, and having fun are among the greatest facets of the game !
Of Course ! While meeting new people, getting some exercise, and having fun, tend to be the primary goals of our newest members, we find that simply getting on the court and playing, does wonders for one's game and confidence level.
For those looking for a friendly (...and low stress) introduction, we recommend joining us for "Open Play", which is the perfect opportunity to "get to know" us, our members, and discover all that our Club has to offer !
Absolutely ! Most of our members will go out of their way to be friendly, as we actively encourage everyone to be patient and helpful to our newest members and guests. A polite invitation is usually all that's necessary for a new opponent (...and possibly a new friend !)
After all....We were once new too!
If you do not own a paddle, we happily offer a Racket Rental Service at ($3 per session), and balls are available for purchase for as little as $1 dollar a piece.
As to what to wear or bring, we recommend...
- dressing lightly in Loose, Clean and Comfortable, Athletic clothing (Clothes should be a different color from the ball..so try to avoid white or orange),
- that shoes be clean, indoor, athletic runners or sneakers (...without black soles/because they can scuff the floors),
- and possibly a bottle of water, although water and soft drinks may be purchased on site at a cost of $1 per bottle or can.
We believe the Sport should be accessible by everyone, within a safe, friendly and welcoming environment !
To help us achieve this, we recommend new players take a moment to review our "Rules and Regulations" page, for complete club details.
Costs for Private and Group Lessons can range from $25.00 - $45.00/hour depending on what you're looking for and what your aiming to be.
Because The Peoples Table Tennis Club is a registered Non-Profit Organization, (...we feel it is worthwhile mentioning), that Club fees are used to cover the costs of the actual venue location, and for the maintenance, repair, and replacement of worn and damaged equipment (tables and nets), for the betterment of our entire community.
With that said, no Membership fee is required to play with us, as we happily offer Guest Passes at $12 a session, (...which are a perfect way for new players to check us out.)
For those planning on playing more often, we also offer Yearly Memberships at a cost of $10/year, which entitles you to preferred pricing on our various pass packages. For Full Details, we encourage you to visit our "Passes & Memberships" page, or call us, for more information.
